Kit felt as if her heart had just dropped somewhere in the vicinity of her left toe.

Audie had just proposed that she make her wildest dreams come true. Now that the opportunity was upon her, however, she found herself hesitating.

She paced nervously before the large bay window in her bedroom while Audie watched her calmly, one hand perched on the carved mahogany mantle. Max had given her one of the finest rooms at Stangael when she came here as a forlorn orphan at age eleven. Her suite was one of her favorite places in the world, filled with bright sunlight, wonderful memories, and mementoes and gifts from around the world, given to her by her parents, Max and Audie over the years.

When she’d first been informed of her parents’ deaths, Kit had wondered if she would ever be happy again in her entire life. A gray gloom had been cast over her entire world. But then Max had come to Devonshire to retrieve her and caused a brilliant ray of sunlight to pierce her fog.

Max—her dark, exotic knight in shimmering armor.

Now she was considering doing something that put the most important thing in her life at risk. Could she sacrifice her relationship with Max in the hopes that it would evolve into something more than it was at present?

“Maybe we should do it another night,” Kit reasoned, her voice shaking slightly with anxiety.

Audie shook his head. “It has to be tonight.”

“Why?” Kit hissed.

“Because Max rarely drinks, that’s why. Who knows how long it will be before he ties one on again? Do you really want to wait until the night you’re engaged to be married, or worse yet, the night before your wedding? He’s sure to reach for a bottle on those occasions, just as he did earlier after seeing you being pleasured by me.” Kit blushed at his casual reference to what happened in the storage room earlier.

Now that she had cooled off some, she was stunned when she recalled her uncharacteristically wanton behavior. It seemed as if another woman had stepped into her riding boots for a brief period. She cleared her throat as she tried to banish the memory.

“How can you be sure the reason Max is so upset is due to jealousy? Couldn’t you just be misinterpreting his fury at finding his virginal ward tampered with by his St.

Claire servant?”

“Do you think I would propose this crazy scheme to you if I had the remote suspicion that was the case? That would be sick, wouldn’t it?” Kit frowned and began pacing again. “Yes, I suppose it would. It just seems so farfetched that Max wouldn’t think he was worthy of me. I can’t think of anything more ridiculous.”

“Neither can I. But it makes sense if you consider how he loved your mother so desperately, all the while knowing that he was a distant second in her eyes. He cared deeply for your father as well. He takes the trust that
